Bois de Rose - Smocked Dresses

Of all the hand - smocked clothing on the market, Bois de Rose is one of the highest in quality.   The material is absolutely the right heft - not thin or flimsy and yet not too thick.  Impressive is the word I'd use.

Fortunately, it is not necessary (although it would be nice) to visit Paris to acquire children’s clothes from Bois de Rose. Their clothing can be difficult to find.   Maison de Belles Choses online in the U.S.A. (Retail shop in San Francisco) has a number of offerings at the moment that we will picture and describe.

This is the Bois de Rose French Blue Dress.  The design is simple yet elegant.  The collar and cuffs have white ric-rac.  The front area has a criss-cross stitching over the smocking.  The buttons are covered and there is a bow finishing off the back.

Add a design of bows and a deep navy-blue light corduroy and you have the Bois de Rose Navy Dress with Bows.  It is quite a deep blue and it comes out a bit blackish on the website, but let me assure you it is blue.  The long sleeves have blue cloth-covered buttons on a white cuff.

Another dress in the same color but with a design rather than an icon is the Bois de Rose Chevron Dress.  Tiny flowers are embedded in the smocking, and together they form a chevron.  Like the Navy dress above, they have white cuffs with a blue cloth-covered button.

The Blue Floral Smocked Dress has amazingly detailed smocking, the like of which I’ve rarely seen. Check out the subtlety of color and stitching. We love the super-detailed floral pattern on the material, and the back has a tie sash which adds an elegant touch. The buttons are covered with the same dress material, which is something you don’t see often on other smocked dresses. The sleeves have ric rac  detail on the collar and cuff.

Technically not a dress, but nonetheless worthy of a look is the Bois de Rose Boys Dinosaur Longall.  It has two embroidered dinosaurs (I'm going to date myself here, but they look like brontosauruses to me.  Do those even exist in the modern lexicon today?)  It is dark navy also, and comes complete with a white cordoroy shirt with blue trim on the collar and covered cloth buttons (also blue.)  And the pants come lined so your little one can deal with chilly temperatures, unlike our dinosaur friends many millions of years ago.

We love the story this person had when discovering the store Bois de Rose on a visit to Paris.  The author trip mentions something that many people aren’t aware of – hand-smocking is very labor-intensive and that also adds to the cost. Fortunately, for the best purchases, the style and quality are long-lasting and it is common to hear of Grandmothers passing along trunks of smocked clothing to their grand-children, much to the delight of their mothers.
